I have some more substantial things to write about my trip to Chattanooga this past weekend, but would like to post just a few random thoughts that I accumulated on the way to Chattanooga. My ears pressurized many times during my flights; I wonder what dangerous environment in history killed off every other humanoid who [...]

Nicholson: The Thorn

I stood a mendicant of God before His royal throne And begged him for one priceless gift, which I could call my own. I took the gift from out His hand, but as I would depart I cried, “But Lord this is a thorn and it has pierced my heart. This is a strange, a [...]

What’s the Difference?

Sometimes a good friend of mine will say something in passing that will set me thinking for days. Well, tonight it happened again. AG: “So you’ve made that decision for theological reasons?” RD: “Well, for faith reasons.” AG: “You know what I mean.” RD: “They are related, but I mean faith…” After we hung up, [...]

On Trinity Sunday

Today being Trinity Sunday (more…) in the Liturgical Year (during ‘Ordinary Time II’), I thought I might commend John Owen‘s Brief Declaration and Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity to you. I’ve found it particularly helpful on this difficult topic. My [omitted] denies the doctrine of the Trinity and, quite frankly, takes great offense [...]

This morning I read Richard Baxter’s Directions on Rightly Spending the Day, from his Christian Directory (part of his Practical Works). It’s about 5 pages of 20 very practical directions for How to Spend Every Ordinary Day of the Week. Here are a few samples: Direction II. Let God have your first awaking thoughts: lift [...]

Milton: Sonnet 19

When I consider how my light is spent, E’re half my days, in this dark world and wide, And that one Talent which is death to hide, Lodg’d with me useless, though my Soul more bent To serve therewith my Maker, and present [ 5 ] My true account, least he returning chide, Doth God [...]
